Two Foot Teddy Bears Day Tour

Today you’ll do something many Kenyan parents can’t – give their young children a meal.  We’re taking you a unique place – our One Horizon Soup Kitchen For Toddlers, which we created  to help Kenyan families who are living below the poverty line … and, often on the streets.

The big brown eyes of the toddlers you’ll meet on this special safari will pierce your heart – and, the ways you can interact with them are as endless as the Kenyan horizon as we invite you to help us prepare their meals, feed them and play with them.  You’ll arrive with gifts for them and also meet some of their parents who’ll share their stories … and their gratitude for your visit.

What We Do

Many of the gorgeous toddlers you’ll meet today will have spent the night on the streets, but their joy is tangible when we arrive at our Soup Kitchen for Toddlers – simply being there to show you care lifts their spirits and your personal present of games for them evokes sheer delight.

We’ll invite you to help us prepare a nutritious lunch for them, feed them and play a range of games with them.  During the day the decibel meter rises as fun and laughter take hold and these tiny toddlers transform to kids simply being kids again … our adorable two foot teddy bears!

Our day started with a scenic drive through magnificent country to Kiambu – paradoxically this is one of Kenya’s wealthiest counties, yet also home to some of our country’s poorest people.  In many ways this area is a microcosm of Kenya – 50% of our people live on or below the poverty line and $USD1,300 is the average annual income per person.  This has led to 25% of Kenyan children under five years of age being chronically malnourished and underweight and these statistics are the reason we established our soup kitchen.

Our Two Foot Teddy Bears sustainable tourism safari will give you an insight into some of the ways we are working to solve poverty in Kenya … and gives you a chance to play your own role in helping us forge change.

The Highlights

Interacting with the gorgeous toddlers you’ll meet, helping them laugh again, giving them a nourishing meal and engaging with their parents … these are just some of the highlights of our Two Foot Teddy Bears giving safari.

You’ll also gain a genuine insight into the lives of Kenya’s poorest people and an understanding of the family dynamics and generational cycles that impact their lives. Most of the toddlers will arrive alone, but a few will be accompanied by their mum, dad or grandma – hearing their stories will intrigue you and touch your heart.  These desperate families can’t afford to feed their children, let alone pay their rent and many are forced to live on the streets.

Simply by visiting and connecting you are helping to change their lives.  You’ll leave us knowing you’ve eased a little of their stress and given them hope.  Our hope is that one day we can involve all Kenya’s struggling families in our One Horizon children’s, women’s or community programs and each day we edge closer to realising this dream … thanks to people like you who embrace our unique approach to travel.

Being unwanted, unloved, uncared for, forgotten by everybody, I think that is a much greater hunger, a much greater poverty than the person who has nothing to eat.

Testimonials
Just wanted to say thanks once more for hosting us with One Horizon. We were lucky enough to stay in some fantastic resorts for the rest of our honeymoon, yet that day in Kibera with the kids was my favourite day of the whole trip, and is a memory that will stay with the two of us forever. You were fantastic and together with the kids' smiles made our day!! Good luck with everything, and keep up the great work you are doing, as well as your positive attitude that is truly infectious!

An absolutely incredible, hands-on experience. You get to see what most tourists don't see, while making a difference. One of the best memories from our trip, I can't recommend them enough.

They say that saving a life is saving a generation. The hundreds upon
thousands of lives that you save and improve on a daily basis, equate to a contribution to our world that I had never come across until meeting all of you. The work that you do, and the kindness and compassion with which you do it, is a true inspiration that has changed my outlook on life. With love and the hope for a better world for all.

Your Accommodation

If you’ve not yet booked your accommodation in Kenya, One Horizon can help out with a choice of 3, 4 and 5-star Nairobi hotels depending on your budget and requirements. Nairobi has many fine hotels that offer real value. If you’re venturing beyond Nairobi, Our People and Wildlife safaris offer the outstanding facilities that Kenya is famous for. We also ensure the hotels on your wildlife safaris conform to low footprint impacts on the environment.

Your Wellbeing

We strongly advise you to always drink from bottled water to ensure your wellness. Please do not administer first aid if any of the Kenyans you meet in our communities require medical assistance – our staff will apply the required first aid. If you require medications, please ensure you bring them with you on each of our journeys as our centres are some distance from good medical options and we may not be able to respond immediately.

Your Security

All our centres are in secured, patrolled grounds and our experienced One Horizon staff are always with you. We are all either Kenyans or ex-pats so we have our fingers on the pulse of Kenya and we vary our tours if we envisage potential problems due to election campaigning or other situations. Mostly, we’re all mums and dads so we’ll never put you, or ourselves, at risk. We recommend all travellers refer to their Government’s travel requirements when visiting Africa.
