Because we simply couldn’t change lives like Maria’s without the support of our travellers. Maria came into One Horizon’s orbit when she entered our peer support and small business program for Masai women. She’d had a tough time over the last few years. As the third and most senior of her husband’s wives, Maria had become isolated and unsupported. In a community without social security safety nets, hunger and depression had consumed her. A mother’s love is one of the most powerful forces on the planet. Sadly in Kenya it’s often trumped by poverty – grinding hardship, so extreme and so crippling, that single mothers are forced onto the streets with their children. One Horizon works to step in before this happens. We understand the Kenyan circumstances that leave these women with no resources and little hope. When we bring them under the One Horizon umbrella, we give them the opportunity to create new lives for themselves and their families.

MUM TABITHA NEVER GAVE UP

When we first met Tabitha a decade ago, we didn’t really think she would survive another day. The single mother of three young children weighed just 40 kilos. She was so chronically ill from a range of illnesses that we were prepared for the worst.   Tabitha was bedridden and very sick, but with her determination and the dedication of those closest to her, she slowly fought back....
